This Best Grilled Pizza recipe offers a deliciously crispy and smoky twist on traditional pizza by cooking it directly on a hot grill. Using simple ingredients like fresh mozzarella, tomato sauce, and basil, this method combines the flavor of freshly grilled dough with melty cheese and bright toppings for a perfect summer meal.

Ingredients

Ingredients

  • Parchment paper
  • Olive oil, for drizzling
  • 1 lb pizza dough (homemade or store bought)
  • 1/2 cup tomato sauce
  • 8 ounces fresh mozzarella, sliced into 1/8 inch thick rounds
  • 6-8 fresh basil leaves
  • 2 tablespoons grated or shredded parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Grill: Preheat your grill to 425 degrees F, and use a grill brush to scrape off any leftover bits to ensure a clean grilling surface.
  2. Prepare Pizza Dough: Place parchment paper on a hard surface and drizzle olive oil onto it. Stretch your pizza dough on the parchment paper into your desired shape until it no longer pulls back.
  3. Transfer Dough to Grill: Flip the parchment paper with dough upside down over the grill grates so the dough lands safely on the grill. Peel off the parchment paper carefully.
  4. Grill Dough Side One: Close the grill lid and cook the pizza dough for 2-3 minutes until the bottom is golden brown. Bubbles may form on top but will settle after flipping.
  5. Flip the Dough: Use tongs to check the underside of the dough, and if golden brown, flip the pizza over carefully.
  6. Add Toppings: Quickly spread tomato sauce over the cooked side, add fresh mozzarella slices, and arrange basil leaves on top.
  7. Grill Pizza Side Two: Close the grill lid and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until the cheese melts and the underside is golden brown.
  8. Remove and Serve: Use tongs to slide the pizza onto a cutting board. Let it cool for 5-10 minutes, sprinkle parmesan cheese on top, cut into 16 slices, and serve.

Notes

  • Use parchment paper and olive oil to easily transfer dough without sticking.
  • Keep the grill lid closed while cooking to ensure even heat distribution.
  • Watch the pizza closely to avoid burning; cooking times may vary with grill type.
  • Feel free to customize toppings to your preference once the dough is grilled on one side.
  • Allow the pizza to rest before slicing to let the cheese set slightly for easier cutting.
