Perfect for game day or casual gatherings, it can be served warm or cold alongside crunchy tortilla chips.

Ingredients

Meat Layer

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • ½ cup water
  • 2 tablespoons taco seasoning (about 1 ounce)

Bean Layer

  • 2 cups refried beans (can use canned, about 16 ounces)
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

Cream Cheese Layer

  • ¾ cup cream cheese (softened, about 6 ounces)
  • 1 cup sour cream

Toppings

  • ½ cup cheddar cheese (finely shredded, about 4 ounces)
  • ½ cup tomatoes (diced, about 3 plum tomatoes or 1 ¼ large tomatoes)
  • 2/3 cup black olives (sliced, about 3.8 to 4 ounces, can use canned)
  • 3 green onions (green tops diced)

Instructions

  1. Cook the ground beef: Place the ground beef in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook, breaking the meat apart, until no longer pink and fully browned.
  2. Season the beef: Drain any grease from the skillet, return it to the burner, then add taco seasoning and water to the beef. Reduce heat to medium and stir occasionally until the mixture is well combined and most of the liquid evaporates.
  3. Prepare the bean layer: In a medium bowl, combine refried beans, ½ cup of sour cream, and salt. Stir until smooth and set aside.
  4. Prepare the cream cheese mixture: In a separate medium bowl, mix softened cream cheese with 1 cup sour cream until the mixture is smooth and creamy.
  5. Assemble the dip: In an 8 x 8 inch square pan, spread the refried beans mixture evenly at the bottom. Layer the cream cheese mixture over the beans. Add the seasoned ground beef evenly on top of the cream cheese layer.
  6. Add the toppings: Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the beef. Then, evenly distribute diced tomatoes and sliced black olives over the cheese. Garnish with diced green onion tops.
  7. Serve: Enjoy the dip warm directly from the pan, or refrigerate to serve cold later. Serve with tortilla chips for dipping.

Notes

  • You can use canned refried beans and black olives for convenience.
  • The dip can be served warm or cold depending on preference.
  • For extra spice, add jalapeños or a dash of hot sauce to the beef layer.
  • Make ahead by assembling the dip and refrigerating overnight for flavors to meld.
  • Use low-fat sour cream and cream cheese to reduce fat content if desired.
