Ingredients

Potato Mixture

  • 2 medium sweet potatoes, peeled
  • 1 medium potato (optional, for texture), peeled
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • Nutmeg, to taste
  • Pepper, to taste

Beef Mixture

  • 1 pound (500 g) ground beef
  • 1 cup onion, diced
  • 1/2 cup red bell pepper, diced
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon chili flakes
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon white miso

Topping

  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Potatoes: Peel the sweet potatoes and the optional potato, then cut them into large chunks. Boil or steam the potatoes for 15 to 20 minutes, until they are soft when pierced with a fork. Drain them well to remove excess water.
  2. Mash the Potatoes: Place the cooked potatoes in a bowl. Add the milk, butter, salt, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg. Mash or blend until the mixture is smooth and creamy. Set this mashed potato mixture aside for layering later.
  3. Cook the Ground Beef: Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef along with salt, garlic powder, paprika, and chili flakes. Cook for 5 to 6 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the beef begins to brown.
  4. Sauté Vegetables: Add the diced onion and red bell pepper to the skillet with the beef. Continue cooking for an additional 5 to 7 minutes, until the beef is completely browned and the vegetables have softened.
  5. Add Miso and Mix: Stir in the white miso thoroughly to combine with the beef and vegetable mixture. Remove the skillet from heat once well mixed.
  6. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F) to prepare for baking the casserole.
  7. Layer Beef Mixture: Spread the cooked beef mixture evenly in an ovenproof dish. Sprinkle a small amount of shredded mozzarella cheese over the beef to add flavor and help bind the topping.
  8. Add Mashed Potato Layer: Spread the mashed sweet potato mixture evenly on top of the beef layer. Then sprinkle the remaining mozzarella cheese over the mashed potatoes to create a golden, cheesy crust.
  9. Bake the Casserole: Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake for 15 to 20 minutes, until the cheese on top is melted, bubbly, and golden brown.
  10. Serve: Remove the casserole from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving warm. Enjoy this delicious and hearty meal!

Notes

  • The optional potato in the mash adds a firmer texture to the sweet potato layer, but you can omit it for a purely sweet potato mash.
  • White miso adds umami depth; substitute with soy sauce if unavailable, but adjust salt accordingly.
  • Feel free to customize vegetables by adding mushrooms or zucchini for extra nutrition.
  • This casserole can be made ahead and refrigerated; bake just before serving.
  • Leftovers keep well refrigerated for 2-3 days and reheat nicely in the oven or microwave.
