This simple basil vinaigrette is a bright and flavorful dressing made with fresh basil, garlic, shallots, red wine vinegar, and olive oil. Perfect for drizzling over salads, grilled vegetables, or as a marinade, it comes together quickly in a blender and offers a vibrant herbaceous punch with a subtle kick from optional red pepper flakes.

Ingredients

Basil Vinaigrette

  • 1 small shallot, roughly chopped (about 2-3 tablespoons)
  • 2 cups tightly packed fresh basil leaves, stems removed (about 4 ounces)
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1/2 cup olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt (plus more to taste)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Ingredients: Gather and roughly chop the small shallot. Remove the stems from the fresh basil leaves and wash them thoroughly to ensure no dirt remains. Peel the garlic cloves.
  2. Blend the Dressing: Place the shallot, fresh basil leaves, garlic cloves, red pepper flakes (if using), olive oil, red wine vinegar, and kosher salt into a high-powered blender. Blend on high speed for 60 seconds until the mixture is very smooth and emulsified.
  3. Taste and Adjust: Pour a small amount onto a tasting spoon to check the seasoning. Add more kosher salt or black pepper if needed to suit your taste preferences.
  4. Serve or Store: Use the vinaigrette immediately on your favorite salads or dishes. Alternatively, store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-5 days. Shake or stir well before each use as ingredients may separate over time.

Notes

  • For a milder flavor, reduce the amount of fresh garlic or omit the red pepper flakes.
  • This vinaigrette can be used as a marinade for grilled chicken or vegetables.
  • If the dressing thickens in the refrigerator, bring it to room temperature before using and blend again if needed.
  • Ensure to use a high-powered blender for a smooth consistency; a food processor may result in a chunkier texture.
  • Adjust the vinegar amount to your desired level of acidity.
