This delightful Blueberry Lavender Jam combines the sweet and tart flavor of fresh blueberries with the fragrant floral notes of dried lavender. Perfect for spreading on toast, dolloping on yogurt, or gifting as a homemade treat, this jam is cooked gently on the stovetop to bring out a rich, natural sweetness and a subtle herbal aroma. The optional addition of black chia seeds helps to thicken the jam naturally, making it a wholesome, preservative-free condiment.

Ingredients

Jam Ingredients

  • 18 oz fresh blueberries
  • 1 lemon (zest and juice)
  • 1 tbsp dried lavender
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tbsp black chia seeds (optional, use only if jam needs to be thickened)

Instructions

  1. Wash Ingredients: Thoroughly wash the fresh blueberries and lemon under cool running water to remove any dirt or residues.
  2. Prepare Lemon: Set aside the washed blueberries. Zest the lemon carefully, avoiding the bitter white pith, and then juice the lemon to extract fresh juice.
  3. Combine Ingredients: In a medium-sized pot, add the blueberries, lemon zest, lemon juice, water, dried lavender, and sugar. Stir the ingredients together to combine.
  4. Muddle Mixture: Use a muddler or the back of a spoon to gently crush the blueberries and muddle all ingredients together, releasing their juices and aromas.
  5. Cook Jam: Place the pot over medium heat and cook the mixture for about 45-50 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the fruit breaks down and the jam reaches a thick, spreadable consistency.
  6. Add Chia Seeds (Optional): If the jam is not thick enough, stir in 1 tablespoon of black chia seeds and cook for an additional 5 minutes. Chia seeds will help naturally thicken the jam as it cools.
  7. Cool the Jam: Remove the pot from heat and allow the jam to cool for about 10 minutes, which helps it set further.
  8. Store: Spoon the jam into clean jam jars or airtight containers. Store in the refrigerator for immediate use or freeze for longer preservation.

Notes

  • Use fresh, ripe blueberries for the best flavor and natural sweetness.
  • Dried lavender should be culinary grade to ensure it is safe and pleasant for consumption.
  • The optional chia seeds act as a natural thickener and add extra fiber and nutrition.
  • Jam will continue to thicken as it cools, so aim for a slightly looser consistency when cooking.
  • Store homemade jam in sterilized jars to prolong shelf life and avoid spoilage.
  • This jam is delicious on toast, pancakes, yogurt, or as a topping for desserts.
