This Best Grilled Salmon recipe features succulent salmon fillets marinated in a flavorful blend of brown sugar, lemon juice, soy sauce, garlic, and olive oil, then grilled to perfection. The marinade infuses the fish with a perfect balance of sweet, tangy, and savory notes, while grilling in foil ensures moist, tender results with a beautifully seared finish.

Ingredients

Marinade

  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup lite soy sauce
  • ¼ cup olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 2 cloves minced garlic

Salmon

  • 4 salmon fillets (6 oz. each)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Marinade: Place all marinade ingredients into a gallon-size zip lock bag. Seal the bag and gently squeeze to thoroughly combine the marinade components.
  2. Marinate Salmon: Add the salmon fillets into the sealed bag with the marinade. Refrigerate for 1 to 3 hours to allow the flavors to deeply penetrate the fish.
  3. Preheat Grill: Heat your grill to medium-high temperature, preparing it for grilling the salmon.
  4. Prepare Foil Dishes: For each salmon fillet, fold a piece of heavy-duty aluminum foil into a shallow dish shape with raised sides. Place a salmon fillet skin-side down into each foil dish.
  5. Add Marinade & Grill: Spoon a little of the marinade over the top of each fillet in the foil dishes. Place the foil dishes directly on the grill grates, cover with the grill lid, and cook for 15 to 18 minutes until the salmon is mostly cooked through.
  6. Sear Salmon: Flip the salmon fillets out of the foil dishes directly onto the grill grates, skin-side up, and sear for about 1 to 2 minutes to get a nice grilled finish.
  7. Remove Skin & Serve: Carefully lift and scrape off the salmon skin, which should come off easily. Serve immediately and enjoy your perfectly grilled salmon.

Notes

  • Marinate the salmon for at least 1 hour but no longer than 3 hours to avoid overpowering the fish flavor.
  • Using heavy-duty aluminum foil helps prevent tearing and keeps juices contained.
  • Keep the grill lid closed during cooking to maintain steady heat and even grilling.
  • Fish is done when it flakes easily with a fork and reaches an internal temperature of 145°F (63°C).
  • For added flavor, garnish with fresh lemon wedges or chopped herbs like dill or parsley.
