Deliciously crispy and tender Air Fryer Churros made with a homemade cinnamon dough, perfectly air-fried to golden perfection and coated in cinnamon sugar. This easy recipe offers a healthier alternative to traditional deep-fried churros without sacrificing any flavor, making it ideal for a sweet snack or dessert.

Ingredients

Churro Dough

  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg

Cinnamon Sugar Coating

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Boil Water and Butter Mixture: In a medium pot, combine water, cubed butter, 1 tablespoon sugar, and salt. Heat over medium-high until the mixture reaches a boil.
  2. Add Flour and Form Dough: Reduce heat to low and add the flour all at once. Stir vigorously with a spatula until the mixture pulls away from the sides and forms a ball.
  3. Mix Dough with Cinnamon and Vanilla: Transfer the dough to a stand mixer bowl or use a hand mixer. Add 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract. Mix on medium speed for 5 minutes to cool slightly and evenly combine the ingredients.
  4. Add Egg and Incorporate: Add the large egg to the dough and continue mixing until fully combined. The dough will become slightly sticky but cohesive.
  5. Pipe the Churros: Spoon half the dough into a piping bag fitted with a star 1M tip. Pipe 5-inch lengths onto a silicone mat or parchment paper. Use scissors to cut the dough at the end of each churro. Repeat with remaining dough.
  6. Freeze the Churros: Place the piped churros in the freezer for 30 minutes to firm up, which helps them hold their shape during cooking.
  7. Preheat Air Fryer and Cook: Preheat the air fryer to 360°F (182°C). Arrange the churros in a single layer inside the basket and air fry for 10 minutes until golden and crisp.
  8. Prepare Cinnamon Sugar: While the churros cook, mix 1/2 cup granulated sugar with 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon in a bowl.
  9. Coat Churros: Remove churros from the air fryer and immediately roll them in the cinnamon sugar mixture to coat evenly.
  10. Serve: Serve churros warm alone or with dipping sauces such as Nutella or caramel for an extra indulgent treat.

Notes

  • Freezing the dough before air frying is crucial to ensure the churros hold their shape and cook evenly.
  • Use a star tip nozzle for the piping bag to create the traditional ridged texture of churros.
  • Ensure the air fryer basket has enough space so churros are not touching; cook in batches if needed.
  • The recipe yields 12 churros approximately 5 inches long, perfect for sharing.
  • Adjust cooking time based on your air fryer model and churro thickness; cook until golden brown and crispy.
